Defences everywhere I turn

Just across the river from St Neots Town Centre the Eaton Ford  flood defence project is well underway. I chatted with one of the supervisors of the project like you do, and she said that the worse problem for the construction team was the breaking in of the compounds over night and equipment bei trashed.

Apart from that, this massive effort to stop any chance of Eaton Ford being deluged in a flood is going well. I struck me that quite a lot of what we do we do on the defensive. We try to protect ourselves against a plague of ‘flu, we defend our castles  against burglary with flashing lights and sirens, and protect our life in general against disaster with all sorts of insurance policies. Maybe some folk say prayers to ward off nasty things happening – certainly the Old Prayer Book people of the 17th century believed in litanies against plague and pestilence and sudden misfortune.

Trouble is, at the end of the day the floods can come and catch us unawares. Best we can do is to be sensible, enjoy life and drive on the right side of the road. And ask God to keep us in his loving arms – come what may.
