If not the moon, Everest and Ferrar House

Back from Little Gidding and watching the news – Ralph Fiennes ascending to the top of Everest – the oldest man to ever do so, and  having had heart problems as well. He said the way that he kept going was to keep on plodding and plodding away – and not think about ever getting to the top of the mountain. It has worked – an amazing man in my opinion.

Then there is Ellie Simmonds the 14 year old paralympic swimmer  and gold medalist who is training up for the paralympic world cup in Manchester. With an MBE behind her and huge amounts of admiration for her determination and talent – she is an inspiration to us all. She may be small but she has reached for the heights and got there. May she have a long and fruitful career inspring others to do and achieve.

So, Ascension Day.  40 days after Easter – the date moving therefore every eyar.    Little Gidding was blessed with some sunshine and I found time to lie in the grass in the fields and look up at the blue sky. Quite what did happen at the Ascension of Jesus ? We shall never know, of course. But I love the collect for the day:

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that as we believe your only begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended to the heavens, so we in heart and mind may also ascend and with him continually dwell…

Little Gidding is the sort of place where you can drift away for a while from the every day stuff, important as it is, and reach out for something else – the pervading spirit of God which has inspired thousands of people here over the years. I even wrote a poem – but it needs to be honed a bit more before it even thinks of going public

Little Gidding is now run by warden Rev Catherine Lack  and if you want to know more, type in Ferrar House into google you will find the web-site.

Right, back to parish things and a family about to arrive to discuss baptism.

Coming next…. stinging nettles.. it cant get more exciting than that!

inspiring others to do and achieve

  1. Hey Rd Babe, I think you mean Rannulph Fiennes not Ralph who is the angsty actor though they are related. Thanks for a lovely day.

    • Glad someone spotted the deliberate mistake – of course I meant Rannulph Fiennes – EVERYONE knows that – guess they must be related…..
