Just another weblog

The days of the Vicar’s Thunder Box are limited at Diddington

Dramatic things are happening right now in St Laurence Church, Diddington near St Neots.

vicar's thunderbox

Above is a most unfortunate object named as you will see in such a way as to imply that The Vicar should be content to use this ancient arrangement should need arise. I was havig none of it, and with great joy I have found today the keen and able Mr Dodman of Diddington beginning the 24/7 project in church – taking out very rotten and wood wormy floor boards to make room for the building contractors to come in and make a nice new meeting area and servery in the north aisle  and new toilet cubicle in the tower base.  As soon as yesterday service was done, Dave D was in there like a wild man, doing what needed to be done – and incase any archdeacons are reading this or DAC Ely members – it is all being done under faculty. No more shall the Vicar’s Thunder Bucket come into play ( actually, I never could get onto it)

Gone also are the days of  ” The Squires Pew” . Our Patron, Mr Thornhill, was most keen that the squire’s pew was adapated so that it became a far more flexible meeting area in the south aisle – and now that a not very old east facing screen has been removed, it has opened up the whole area. I rather think that when there is a squires pew of some historical merit ( such as at St James Twycross where I once roamed as Vicar) it should not be tampered with, but the Diddington one was rather much a hotch potch of wooden screening – and the older panel facing northwards remains.

We are indebted to The Donarbon Community Fund for helping us with funding ( £10,000) and also the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust (£5,000) without whose generosity this project could not be progressing.

So, yes, there is plenty left at Dddington Church… and well done, Dave for all your hard work.

So bring on the first flush – we are looking forward to Bishop David dedicating the new facilities on September 29th at 6pm.
