A friend of Ivy?

ivyHedera helix.

Spent too much time lately trying to rip  ivy off the back fence of my garden. Maybe I should love it a bit more? Now, climbing ivy can damage walls and harm old trees – and I’m not sure that it is good to have it climbing all over church walls either. But, I am reliably informed, that it should not be cut off a vigourous tree because ivy and its host can be good for one another. Ivy is a shelter and source of food for wildlife and its flower provides nectar in winter for many insects and birds love its berries.

Helix is the Latin for snail and the parson poet Andrew Young wrote ” The snail does the holy will of God slowly” I rather like that – the idea of doing the holy will of God slowly – in contrast to the dashing around Ive done today.

I shall ponder more, then, on  ivy. And remember, too, that as ivy and strong trees are good for eachother, we need diversity in our gardens – some of it unplanned and spontaneous. I frankly found the BNP political broadcast this evening distasteful. Yes, we need some sensible controls on immigration, but a culturally diverse Britain is a vibrant and colourful place – reflecting Gods wish for us to live together as his children in harmony. Harmony and diversity glorify God – may we study our gardens to discern that truth – and maybe I shall leave my ivy alone in future.

By the way..how on earth could a MP have spent £500 on petunias and fushias and put that in as expenses? Thats one large petunia and fuschia bed!!!
