Post Haste

Was in a bit of a hurry leaving Chapter at Great Staughton today and nearly ende dup in a ditch which I had parked near….. but caught site of this old post – it feels kind of evocative of something… but not sure what:

Great Staughton - old roadside post

Chained to meetings tomorrow..but like them really if they get things done.

Praying for folk I know who are poorly at the moment and waiting for the results of tests. Also again for elderly folk in Nursing Homes who are very confused. Sleep Tight readers and thanks for ” viewing” .

  1. Perhaps the post is a part of ‘another’ Gallow, you seem to have a dearth of them in that part of the world.
A favourite ‘jog out’ as my father called it, in his old car, was a Sunday afternoon route that took in the famous Paxton Gibbett.
I remember being told as a six or seven year old that “this was where Dick Turpin eneded his days”. I have since discovered that Dick Turpin had practically nothing to do with this area of the country, and, if my memory is correct, hanged in York?
Still, to a young lad the story and the sight of that crooked old tree was captivating. Is the gibbett still there?

    • Hi Wingy, do you mean by any chance Caxton Gibbet – that is c 8 miles from here and quite famous….I dont think we have one round here. The Great Dtaughton post I think is an old gate post….

  2. Oh dear. What a faux pas on my part.
Well, I did say my Dad drove; he drove not just physically but mentally too, us, his offspring around the bend.
If any of you want to know what an innocuous lump is in the middle of an East Anglian field , that you have always thought until now was just a lump, then contact me, 9 times out of 10, I will be able to tell you its either a ‘barrow’ a ‘tumulus’ or the long lost burried long ship of Zogg the Bottlewasher who landed in E.A. in AD 911 having defeated the Grumbleweeds just off Harwich.

Easy mistake though Caxton/Paxton Paxton/Caxton; whats wrong with you lot don’t you have any Barton Bendishers or Little Snorings in…… wherever it is you live????????
