Huge number of fatalities predicted

NO – not by swine ‘flu but by smoking:

Deaths caused by smoking

One in two long-term smokers will die prematurely as a result of smoking – half of these in middle age. The most recent estimates show that around 114,000 people in the UK are killed by smoking every year, accounting for one fifth of all UK deaths.

We have a worse case scenario of 60,000 dying from swine ‘flu – that would be pretty awful, but no where near the number who right now are killing themselves thorugh smoking-  and all the NHS cost that the care of their illnesses  involves.

Now, if we were told that 114,000 people would die from swine ‘flu this year we’d all  go into an even worse panic mode – but the silent killer of smoking doesnt get the hype of swine ‘flu – probably because the government still gets an income from tax on the things and it doesnt want to be draconian about about taking away people’s liberty to kill themselves slowly.

World-wide, almost 5 million die prematurely each year as a result of smoking. Based on current trends, this will rise to 10 million within 20 years.

What a strange world we live in – Im all for sensible ‘flu precautions, but lets get things into perspective. And you can tell I think smoking is revolting. But how marry that up with the freedom of individuals to live their lives as they wish?

off to see the world in the rain.
