Jasper the Bus Puss, a snake and Gorilla

Love this story from Plymouth about a Pussy Cat called Jasper who likes to take rides on the local buses:

A cat has become a well-known commuter on a bus service and regularly amuses passengers during their journey, a travel company said.

For several months Casper has queued with other passengers to get the number 3 service from his home in Plymouth, Devon.

Bus company First said the adventurous animal sits in the queue and then quietly trots on board and curls up on a seat for the ride.

He is now so well known the bus drivers are aware which stop it is to let him off when Casper wants to go home.

Owner Susan Finden has only just found out about his antics – but a spokesman for First said they have been bussing Casper around for months.

Mrs Finden, who picked the cat out of a rescue home in 2002, said he had always been a free spirit and she named him after the cartoon ghost as he had a habit of walking off.

The 55-year-old care worker said: “He’d always go off and have a wander. Once I had to walk a mile-and-a-half with a cat basket to bring him back from a car park.

“He does love people, and I don’t know what the attraction is but he loves big vehicles like lorries and buses.”

A notice has been put up in the bus drivers’ rest room in Plymouth asking them to look after the rogue passenger if they spot him sneaking on.

Driver Rob Stonehouse told the Plymouth Herald: “He usually just curls up at the back of the bus. Sometimes he nips between people’s legs but he never causes any trouble.”

We all know that many churches have Pet Services – and I dont think the Vicar of Dibley TV series invented the idea. I read recently that in past cenuries it was very common for people to bring their dogs to church and that was why rails were put up infront of the altar – or indeed chancel screens were put up to keep dogs  away from the sanctuary. Have we come too fussy now when deciding who or what comes into church?? I suppose if we have carpets down, the thought of cats and dogs coming into church ( other than guide dogs of course) might worry us  – but they and us are all God’s creatures. So, Im pleased we have Pet Services – and last year at Diddington I was well pleased when a snake came. It was a very long snake and great to touch – all sort of, well, snake like….

snake Dont think Id like to see one on a bus, though!

And before I leave the animal topic, here is Nico the Gorilla at Longleat:

I was watching a bit of TV with Mum today and he popped up on the TV programme ” Animal Park” which is based at Longleat Safari park in Wiltshire.

He is 47 years old now and recently lost his long-term partner Samba – so the wardens are trying to cheer him up as he was spending a lot of time crying. Oh,bless him ( lest we forget how closely we are related to these wonderful mammals) So, he has Sky-HD TV and a very large ” zapper” or remote control to you. How clever is that???

Long long ago, my Trimby ancestors farmed the land around Longleat – Trimby’s Marshes – I bet they never thought there would be gorillas there…..

  3. Oh my God!!!!!
When I saw your comment ‘what chicken be that’ I looked at the second picture again. After a few moments I
realised what I thought was a smokey grey coloured Hen is infact a “Gorilla” holding something.
I swear I hadn’t been on the old falling down water it was about 7.15am.
But….. look at the picture again; its possible to see a hen with its head pecking away at the grass(as they do), a wooden fence behind it, and attached to its bum an old carpet slipper of the same colour as the hen.
Yeh ….there you are see you can see it as well. Oh wait a moment I think I can see an image of the BVM as well!!!!! Holy smoke. Its a revelation. It must be. You could make a fortune on Ebay with that Paxxy.
