164 – any ideas?

Day 2 August 13th - stone slab 164

This morning’s discovery at Great Paxton – a slab laid into the floor of the tower base, newly excavated. It hasnt been lifted yet – we shall wait till the archeologist comes tomorrow. It seems to have 164 carved into the stone – but no digit after the 4 – otherwise it might look like a slab marking a 164* burial. Or, maybe it was started and never finished and then used as infilling in the tower floor like all the other stones that have come to light turned carved  face down.

And I reckon this Saxon stone mason felt like having a bit of fun on this capital ( I think its called a capital)

is it a bat 2

I reckon thats a bat – they had them pre 1066!

More piccies later on
