Poems and polars

Heres a great poetry site:

I had come across this lovely poem before by Phoebe Hesketh:

This is the hour the gods set to music:
Song in the branches, hope in the heart,
Rhythm in poplars like green spires adorning
The morning in tune with the moment apart.

Today is a soaring; and summit and steeple
And smoke form the clearing discover the sky.
Uncover the sky for us, upward-bound-skylark-
The song will remain though the singer must die.

This is the peak of the measureless minute
That mankind aspires to and never can hold,
Disclosed in a flash by a primrose, a linnet-
The instant that tells us that nothing grows old.

I think I have come across it set to a hymn tune – rings a bell with anyone?

And for something completely different:

There’s a polar bear
In our Frigidaire—
He likes it ’cause it’s cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He’s nibbling the noodles,
He’s munching the rice,
He’s slurping the soda,
He’s licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he’s in there—
That polary bear
In our Fridgitydaire.

by Sheldon Allan Silverstein

ploar bear

Which reminds me, my fridge is past redemption and its time to find a new one. Im going to splash out on a fridge freezer  very soon, which is about as materialistic as I can get. ( Apart from my computer of course….)

And one last  poem:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

by Rabindranath Tagore

Right, time to see Henry 8th do some more damage to the reputation  of the Holy Catholic Church on BBC2. Have a good evening paxtonvic readers
