Folk Tale – by R S Thomas

Prayers like gravel

flung at the sky’s

window, hoping to attract

the loved one’s

attention. But without

visible plaits to let

down for the believer

to climb up,

to what purpose open

that casement?

I would have refrained  long since

But that peering once

Through my locked fingers

I thought that I detected

the movement of a curtain.

  1. I enjoyed reading your blog. I found it because I was following up an R S Thomas poem which was referred to in Michael Maynes book on Prayer.
I note that you describe yourself as liberal. I believe that there are good and bad sorts of liberalism , just like cholesterol . The good is a concern for fairness and equality. The bad side is the excessive liberalisation of society and the harm inflicted on poor communities by undermining marriage and parental authority. I explain this more fully in my book The Liberal Delusion.
    Best wishes
