Prayers for Remembrance Sunday

Hope these might be helpful for those of you preparing for tomorrow:

Prayers for Remembrance Sunday

Opening Prayers

1) Almighty God

Grant that we who gather here today

May pay fitting tribute and honour

To the memory of those who have died

In the service of their  country.

May we be so inspired by the spirit of their love and courage

That, forgetting all selfish and unworthy motives

We may live only to your glory and to the service of your people

May we who desire peace be willing to work for justice.

We ask this Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

2) Almighty Father,

We thank you for bringing us together this Remembrance Sunday

To recall with tenderness and respect

those who lost their lives from this community

and the many thousands further afield in the wars

0f the last century.

We pray for all those still caught up in conflicts across the world

and acknowledge what may be our own confusion about war

and the use of weapons.

Father, help us to meet with you in these moments of worship

Make us ever mindful of your goodness towards us

and strengthen us to be aware of the needs of others.

As we pray for peace, give us peace in our hearts.

Through Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

Collects for Remembrance Sunday.

Almighty father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subjected to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

God our refuge and strength, bring near the day when wares will cease and poverty and pain shall end, that earth may know the peace of heaven through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Post Communion Sentence

God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

A Prayer for Peace.

Peace is the gentle lapping of the waves on a sandy beach

Softly falling on a winters night.

The flight of a bird

The smile on a baby’s face

Reading quietly a favourite book

Every night when we settle down to sleep

Peace is a happy heart

When we are content

Lord, grant us peace.

Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life.
Hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember this day; fulfil in them the purpose of thy love; and bring us all, with them, to thine eternal joy; though Christ our Lord.
Amen

Blessing

God grant to the living, grace; to the departed, rest; to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth, and all mankind, peace and concord; and to us and all his servants, life everlasting; and the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, come down upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

Prayer scratched on the wall of a prison cell in Cologne during the Second World War

I believe in the sun,
even when it does not shine.
I believe in love,
even when I cannot feel it.
I believe in God,
even when he is silent.

  4. Hi. Thank you so much for posting your prayers for Remembrance Sunday. As a lay person leading a Remembrance Service today I valued being able to use some of your prayers. They help us to express what is often difficult to put into words.

    Thank you
