The Story of The Stubborn Tree

I love this little story – I cant find any reference to its origins and Ive adapted it from ” The Treasury of Christmas Stories” ( Hunt and Thorne)

The Stubborn Tree

The Jones family had a very large garden

and in one corner they grew little fir trees.

Every Christmas Eve, instead of buying a tree,

Grandad Jones would pull up a tree and plant it in

a bucket of earth before bringing it into the house.

The four Jones children, Matthew, Mark and Luke

and Lucy would then decorate it with tinsel and

lights.

One Christmas Eve it was snowing very hard.

Grandad put on his thick coat  and scarf

and trudged into the snow.

The children sat at the window to watch.

Grandad knew which tree he wanted.

He brushed the snow off and he

PULLED AND HE PULLED AND HE PULLED!

He pushed it backwards and forwards but it wouldn’t

Budge.

Feeling rather silly, he went back into the house and had

to ask the oldest boy, Matthew to help him. So

Matthew put on his thick coat and scarf

and trudged into the snow.

The other children sat at the window to watch.

He stood behind Grandad and together they:

PULLED AND THEY  PULLED AND THEY PULLED!

They pushed it backwards and forwards but it wouldn’t

budge.

Now both were feeling silly, and Matthew went back

into the house and had to ask Mark to help him.

So Mark  put on his thick coat and scarf

and trudged into the snow.

The other children sat at the window to watch.

They stood behind Grandad and together they:

PULLED AND THEY  PULLED AND THEY PULLED!

They pushed it backwards and forwards but it wouldn’t

budge.

Still feeling very silly, Mark trudged back into the house to fetch

Luke.

So Luke put on his thick coat and scarf

and trudged into the snow.

Lucy  sat at the window to watch.

They stood behind Grandad and together they:

PULLED AND THEY  PULLED AND THEY PULLED!

They pushed it backwards and forwards but it wouldn’t

budge.

Now they all felt very stupid.

Luke trudged back into the house to fetch Little Lucy.

So Lucy put on her thick coat and scarf

and trudged into the snow.

Only the cat watched from the window.

And so, they formed a line. Grandad  infront,

holding the tree.

Then came Matthew, holding Grandad.

Then Mark holding Matthew.

Then Luke holding Mark

Finally came Lucy holding Luke

“One, two three heave!”  Shouted Grandad

And… theyPULLED AND THEY  PULLED

AND THEY PULLED!

Suddenly they could hear the root root snap

and the tree lifted out of the ground and as it came

they all fell backwards in the snow laughing

with pleasure.

When they were back in the house with the

tree safely in its pot, Grandad gave Lucy a big hug.

“ Well, “ he said, “ I think we can all learn something

About Christmas this year. The smallest child makes

the greatest difference. Just as Little Lucy caused

the stubborn tree to move, so the infant child Jesus

can move the most stubborn of hearts”
