Christmas Message 2010
From the Bishop of Huntingdon

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” So says St John in the famous opening to his Gospel. The world, he says, is neither accident nor illusion, but was made by God and made good. It has a grain to it that shows in its order and intelligibility, its beauty and in its love. Our predicament is that we both see these things, but seem also to be always falling short of them.

That is as far as some people feel able to go. Pure reason can perhaps take us no further. And yet – there are times when many, perhaps all, of us find the tables turned. A truth, a possibility, an insight, an equation, love, courage, a surprising relationship rise up, not made by us – but discovered. Something of eternity breaks through into our history.

That was what those who met Jesus saw – and more. Here in this human life was the very life of God and love of God, coming to us in our need. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

That’s my prayer for you and your churches and chapels, your communities and your homes this Christmas: that you will glimpse the glory of Christ Jesus, present with you now in your need, and sense his light in your lives – and have a truly Happy Christmas, and remarkable New Year.
